Sutton Coldfield or Birmingham: What to Call Your Location

How a Sutton Coldfield business should name its location on Google, in page titles and in structured data, using what Google and schema.org publish.

Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham are both correct, which is why the question is awkward to settle. Sutton Coldfield sits inside Birmingham City Council's area, and it also has its own town council, its own high street and its own name on the post. For a website the tidy way through is to keep three jobs apart: publish the address exactly as it stands, use the town a customer would actually say in your page titles and copy, and name Birmingham and the West Midlands as the wider area you cover.

Those three fields do not all take the same word, and the trouble usually starts when a business picks one name and pastes it everywhere.

Is Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham, and does it matter online?

Yes and no. Sutton Coldfield is covered by Birmingham City Council and also has a first tier of local government of its own. Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council's site says an interim town council was formally created on 1 March 2016, funded by a precept residents pay through their Birmingham City Council council tax. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Read the town council's own page on how it is set up before repeating it, since local governance arrangements change.

Online it matters for one dull reason. A search engine has no opinion about civic identity: it has the words on your pages and the fields in your business profile. If the people you want to hear from in Four Oaks, Boldmere, Mere Green or Walmley say Sutton Coldfield, and every page you own says Birmingham, you have made yourself harder to match for no gain.

What address should go on the Google Business Profile?

The real one, in the fields provided, with nothing extra bolted on. Google's Business Profile API reference says the location name should reflect your real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery. It also says a storefront address should only be set for businesses that have one, and describes a separate service area field for businesses that provide their service at the customer's location. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Check Google's Business Profile location reference before changing a profile, since Google revises it.

The address is split into parts rather than written as a slogan. Google's guide to creating and editing Business Profile location data shows a storefront address made of address lines, a locality, a postal code, an administrative area and a region code, and describes the administrative area as the highest administrative subdivision used for postal addresses in a country. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Read that guide before you fill the fields in, since Google can change them. In practice:

  • The locality is your post town. If post arrives addressed to Sutton Coldfield, that is what belongs there.
  • The administrative area is the wider postal subdivision, which here is the West Midlands. In the Australian sample Google gives, it holds a state.
  • Birmingham has no field of its own in that address at all. It belongs in the service area and in the visible copy on your site, not in the postal address.
  • The name field takes your actual trading name, not the trading name with two towns and a service tacked on.

The wider consistency work, directories and reviews included, is covered in our guide to local SEO for small businesses.

Which name belongs in page titles and page copy?

The name your customer would say out loud, which for most businesses in the town is Sutton Coldfield. Google's SEO starter guide says a title can include the name of your website or business along with other important information such as the physical location of the business. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Read that guide before rewriting a set of titles.

Where each name earns its place:

  • Main service page title: the service and the town, such as dental implants in Sutton Coldfield.
  • One plain line near the top of that page saying where you are and how far you travel.
  • Contact page: the full address, plus the districts you genuinely cover.
  • District names such as Four Oaks, Boldmere, Mere Green and Walmley only where you actually work.
  • Birmingham in the copy as the wider area you cover, rather than in the title of a page about work in the town.

A homepage saying Birmingham, a footer saying Sutton Coldfield and a profile saying West Midlands reads as a business that is not sure where it is.

How should the wider area be described in structured data?

Keep the fields apart. The address property carries the physical address, and a separate area served property carries the region you cover. Google's structured data guidance for local businesses lists name and address as the required properties for a rich result. Schema.org defines areaServed as the geographic area where a service or offered item is provided, and accepts an administrative area, a place, a geographic shape or plain text. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Read Google's local business structured data reference and the schema.org definition of areaServed before implementing either.

Our own Sutton Coldfield page uses that split: the markup describes a web design service whose area served is Sutton Coldfield, the West Midlands and the United Kingdom, while the postal address stays the registered office in Birmingham city centre.

For most owners this is not hand-written markup. It is a setting in the site platform, or a job for whoever built the site, and the request fits in an email: real postal address in the address fields, the places you cover in the area served field.

Two habits that keep it honest:

  • We keep the area served list to a handful of places we genuinely work in, rather than every town in the county, because a list nobody would believe is worse than a short one.
  • Markup describes the page. If it claims you serve Birmingham, the visible copy should say so too.

Does adding Birmingham to a title make you show up in Birmingham?

Not on its own. Google's help page on local results says they are based mainly on relevance, distance and popularity, so a word added to a title element touches one of those three and does nothing at all to the other two. The same page describes distance as how far each business is from the customer searching. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Read Google's explanation of how local results work before acting on that summary, because the wording changes.

Google also draws the title link it shows from several sources, including the title element, the main visual title on the page and heading elements, so a town stuffed into the title is not certain to be the text a searcher sees. The same guidance asks for titles that are descriptive and concise, distinct for each page, and free of keyword stuffing. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Check Google's guidance on title links before rewriting anything on the strength of it.

What plausibly helps with a city search is city material: work you have really done there, described in its own words, and a service area that includes Birmingham because you travel there. Our own web design in Birmingham page names the city because the registered office is there. The Sutton Coldfield page names the town.

Frequently asked questions

Is it wrong to describe ourselves as a Birmingham business?

No. Sutton Coldfield is within Birmingham City Council's area, so it is defensible. It is just less specific than what a nearby customer is likely to type, so the town usually earns the title and the city earns a sentence.

Can I put Sutton Coldfield in the business name on Google?

Only where the town is genuinely part of the name. If your signwriting and your invoices start with Sutton Coldfield, that is your real-world name and it belongs in the name field as it stands. Sutton Coldfield bolted onto a name nobody uses is a different thing, since the Business Profile location reference linked above asks for the name as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery. Last verified: 7 September 2026. Check it before editing a profile.

We are in Four Oaks rather than the town centre. Which do we use?

Sutton Coldfield in the titles, Four Oaks in the copy and on the contact page. The district tells a local reader exactly where you are; the town is the word most people outside your streets will search for.

We visit customers and have no shopfront. What then?

Set a service area on the profile rather than publishing a home address, and say on the site which places you travel to. Vagueness costs more than a short list of real areas.
